Chorus Energy: How Much a Chorus Actually Lifts
Everyone can hear that a chorus is bigger than the verse before it. Almost nobody can say by how much, because the number is hidden inside a mix: the vocal, the drums and the bass all arrive at once, and the ear reports one impression rather than four measurements.
Separate the record first and the question becomes arithmetic. LangBeat splits every track into six stems, marks the section boundaries with timestamps, then compares the average energy of the drums and bass across the chorus against the section immediately before it.
What is being measured
For each stem, LangBeat stores a loudness envelope: the RMS level of that instrument alone, sampled roughly ten times a second for the length of the record. The chorus lift is the mean of the drum and bass envelopes over the chorus, against their mean over the preceding section, expressed as a percentage change.
It is a measurement of arrangement, not of mastering. A track that is loud throughout can still show a large lift if the drums genuinely enter at the chorus, and a heavily limited record can show a small one even though it feels enormous. That is exactly the difference a mastering meter cannot tell you and a stem separation can.
Why drums and bass
The low end carries perceived weight, and it is the layer most likely to be deliberately withheld during a verse. Vocals are excluded on purpose: a vocal that gets busier at the chorus changes the density of the arrangement without changing its energy, and folding it in would confuse the two.
When LangBeat says nothing
If the section before the chorus is effectively silent, there is no percentage to report. The arithmetic would be a division by something near zero, which produces a large number that means nothing. If a track has no chorus in its section map, or the chorus opens the record, there is nothing to compare against. In every one of those cases the figure is omitted rather than estimated.

Questions
How is chorus energy calculated?
The track is separated into six stems. The drum and bass loudness envelopes are averaged across the chorus and across the section immediately before it, and the lift is the percentage change between those two averages.
Is this the same as loudness or LUFS?
No. LUFS measures the finished mix. Chorus energy measures how the arrangement changes between two sections of the same record, using stems separated from that mix, so it reports what the musicians did rather than what the mastering engineer did.
Why do some tracks show no chorus lift?
Either the section map contains no chorus, the chorus opens the record and has nothing before it to compare against, or the preceding section is close to silent. LangBeat omits the measurement in all three cases instead of publishing a number it cannot stand behind.
Can a chorus have negative energy lift?
Yes. A chorus that strips the drums out, common in dance records that release tension by removing the beat, measures as a drop and is reported as one.
